
Getting a Handle on Medium Wave Carbon Fiber Quartz Lamps
If you’ve ever struggled with a heating process where the surface of your part is burning while the inside is still cold, you know exactly why these lamps exist. They sit right in that sweet spot between short-wave and long-wave infrared. The goal is simple: get the heat deep into the material without torching the outside.
Why Carbon Fiber?
Most people are used to tungsten coils, but we do things differently. We use carbon fiber for the heating element. Why? Because it handles high heat without breaking a sweat and changes how the energy is released. Instead of just hitting the surface and bouncing off, the heat actually sinks in. You end up with a much more even temperature throughout the whole piece. It just feels more controlled.
The Quartz Shell
We wrap that filament in high-purity quartz. Quartz is great because it doesn’t freak out when the temperature jumps suddenly, and it lets the infrared light pass right through without soaking up the heat itself. One heads-up, though: these things get hot.Really hot. If your housing is too tight or your airflow is sluggish, you’re going to trap that heat. If that happens, the seals at the end caps can fail way sooner than they should. Give them some room to breathe.
Making it Work in Your Shop
When you’re wiring these in, you’ve got to think about power density. If you pump in more wattage per centimeter, your ramp-up time is incredibly fast. But there’s a catch. Pushing these lamps to their absolute limit wears out the filament faster. It’s a classic trade-off. We usually suggest a power supply that lets you tweak the voltage a bit so you aren’t always redlining the equipment. You’ll see these lamps everywhere from PET blowing to powder coating and industrial drying lines. They fit right into slots meant for old tungsten lamps, but they distribute energy way better. Just double-check your reflectors. Medium wave radiation doesn’t move the same way short wave does. If your angles are off by even a couple of degrees, you’re going to end up with annoying cold spots on your work. Keep them aligned, and you’re golden.
