Getting the Heat Right: A Look at Carbon Fiber Quartz Lamps
We built these infrared lamps to hit that sweet spot. You know the one—right between the raw intensity of short-wave and the deep soak of long-wave. By putting a carbon fiber heating element inside a high-purity quartz envelope, we can push the heat into the medium-wave range. Why does that matter? Because it actually gets into your materials instead of just searing the surface. You get a deep, steady heat without the constant worry of scorching your product.
Why Carbon Fiber?
Traditional tungsten coils are okay, but they tend to have “hot spots”—those annoying points where the heat bunches up and eventually burns the element out. Carbon fiber is different. It spreads the heat evenly across the whole tube. Then we wrap it in quartz glass, which does two things: it keeps the filament from oxidizing and lets the infrared energy slide right through without getting trapped. It’s fast. Really fast. Way faster than those clunky ceramic heaters. But a word of warning: quartz is fragile. If your assembly line shakes or vibrates a lot, don’t just toss these in. You’ll want a reinforced mounting bracket, or you’re going to end up with shattered glass.
Where This Actually Works
If you’re drying paint, curing adhesives, or shaping plastics, medium-wave is your best friend. The wavelength just clicks with organic materials, so the energy transfers directly and efficiently. Just be careful when you’re wiring these into high-wattage arrays. The heat density climbs quickly. Double-check your power supply tolerances, because a single voltage spike can snap a carbon filament in a heartbeat.
A Few Tips for Installation
These are designed to slide right into your old IR tube setups, but there’s a catch. Carbon fiber expands differently than metal when it gets hot. Don’t overtighten the end caps. Seriously. Give the tube some room to breathe. If you pin the glass too tightly against the chassis, the thermal expansion will just pop the tube during the first heat cycle. Give it a little wiggle room, and you’ll be fine.
