
Getting Your IR Wavelengths Right for Brake Pads
Here is the thing about curing brake pads: you can’t just set it and forget it. If you try to run ceramic pads and semi-metallics through the same IR setup, you’re going to have a bad time. You’ll likely end up with pads that are scorched on the outside but raw in the middle. It all comes down to how these materials “drink” the heat.
Why Material Matters
Semi-metallic pads are aggressive. They soak up short-wave IR fast. If you just crank up the power without thinking about the wavelength, the surface will overheat before the core even gets warm. Ceramics are a different story. They’re pickier. To get the heat to actually penetrate deep into the friction material, you have to be precise. We handle this by tweaking the lamp’s operating temperature and the quartz composition to shift where the heat peaks. Otherwise, the energy just bounces off the surface like light off a mirror.
Picking the Right Gear
We lean on high-intensity short-wave halogen emitters. They pack a ton of heat into a tiny space, which is great because it shreds your curing time. But you’ve got to balance your voltage and wattage against how fast your conveyor is moving. Sure, a higher wattage tube gets the job done faster, but it’ll put a lot more stress on your power supply and your cooling fans. One pro tip: go with reinforced quartz envelopes. They can handle the shock of rapid cycling without burning out. And if you’re dropping these into an old line, double-check your connectors and lead lengths. Nothing is more frustrating than a loose fit when you’re trying to get a line running.
The Trade-off
Short-wave IR is fast. Really fast. But it’s also aggressive. If you push it too hard, you run into “skinning.” That’s when the outside hardens into a shell and traps gases inside the pad. It’s a nightmare. You have to find that sweet spot between lamp intensity and how long the pads stay under the heat. If you start seeing cracks, you’ve probably got too much heat hitting them right at the start of the tunnel. Dial it back.
