
Stop Your Brake Pads from Warping
Ever pull a batch of brake pads out of the oven only to find they’ve bowed or warped? It’s frustrating. You did the work, but the material decided to “spring back” the moment it hit the air. Usually, this happens because of uneven heat. When one part of the pad gets scorched while the center is still cold, you build up internal stress. Once that part leaves the oven, that stress has to go somewhere—so the part bends. We found a better way to handle this. Instead of just blasting the whole chamber with hot air, we use zoned infrared (IR) control.
Why “One Temperature” Doesn’t Work
Most standard ovens treat the entire chamber like one big toaster. But brake pads aren’t flat sheets of paper; they have complex shapes. Here’s the thing: by splitting the IR emitters into independent zones, you can actually target specific spots. You can crank up the heat in the core while keeping the edges a bit cooler. It lets you manage the thermal gradient, which basically bleeds off that internal stress before the resin locks everything in place.
Getting Deep Into the Material
Hot air is slow. It hits the surface and hopes for the best. Shortwave IR is different—it dives deep into the friction material and hits the molecules directly. It’s fast. Really fast. And that matters because if the surface “skins over” too quickly, the core stays wet. Then, later on, that core expands and ruins your tolerances. Zoned IR stops that from happening. You get a part that actually stays within spec.
The Trade-offs (The “Gotchas”)
Now, this isn’t a magic button. High-density IR arrays put out a massive amount of heat. If your conveyor belt crawls too slowly, you’ll scorch the surface. You’ve got to dial in your speed perfectly. You’ll also want a fast PID loop and solid thermocouples so your zones don’t drift. One last tip: add a cooling stage immediately after the final curing zone. It locks those dimensions in tight and keeps the parts from shifting while they cool down. It’s the best way to make sure what you planned is what you actually get.
