Ever pull a part out of the mold only to watch it slowly twist or spring back right in front of you? It’s frustrating. Usually, it happens because the internal stresses didn’t get sorted out during curing. The part is basically fighting itself. To fix this, we’ve moved away from basic heating and started using shortwave infrared lamps with zonal control.
Why “One Size Fits All” Heating Fails
Standard ovens just blast everything with the same amount of heat. But car interiors aren’t flat sheets of plastic; they have weird shapes, thin edges, and thick ribs. The result? Those thin edges overheat and scorch while the thick sections are still under-cured. That temperature gap is exactly what causes the warping. We solve this by splitting the heating array into independent zones. By wiring different lamp banks to their own PID controllers, you can push more energy into the heavy spots and dial it back on the edges. You’re aiming for that sweet spot—the glass transition temperature—across the entire piece. When the whole part hits that mark at once, the dimensions actually stay put.
Getting the Setup Right
We lean on quartz halogen emitters for this. Shortwave IR is great because it doesn’t just sit on the surface; it penetrates deep into the resin, fast. It means the core of your part cures at the same speed as the outside. But you have to be careful with your power density. If you cram too many watts into one small area, you’ll burn the surface before the center is even warm. It’s a balancing act between your wattage and how fast the conveyor is moving.
The Trade-offs (The Not-So-Pretty Part)
Look, zonal control isn’t “plug and play.” It makes your electrical cabinet a lot more crowded. You’re looking at more contactors and more thermocouples to keep track of. And then there’s the heat. High-intensity IR lamps put out a massive amount of waste heat. If your ventilation isn’t beefy enough to pull that hot air out, your electronics will overheat and trip. Trust me, check your cooling fans before you flip the switch.
